1. The Really old stuff” with metal jamb liners or old corded (rope) with big cast iron weights inside the window jambs – these are the oldest counter-balance type systems around. use pulleys and cast-iron weights.

2. Spiral Balances of all types and sizes. A metal tube with an internal spiral rod that provides tension. Common in aluminum and vinyl windows both newer and older models.

3. Block & Tackle Balances: The most common modern style. Uses a spring, pulley, and cord system inside a metal channel. Easy to ID and replace.

4. Constant Force (Coil) Balances: Flat stainless‑steel coil springs mounted in a housing. Very compact and used in many newer vinyl windows.
